Mexico vs Iceland 24/03/18

24 March 2018

After two consecutive victories over Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mexico will meet another European side, Iceland, who faced two low-level opponents, Indonesia and Qatar, following successful qualifications in which they finished top of the group in front of Croatia and Ukraine. El Tri have also battled their way to Russia without much trouble although they haven’t impressed a lot particularly in their away games against Panama, Honduras, and Costa Rica. Despite the lack of stars within their ranks, Iceland have shown great team spirit and compactness through qualifications and especially during the 2016 UEFA European Championship where they emerged as one of the sensations of the tournament. These sides have already met each other last year in a friendly match that went in Mexico’s favor thanks to Alan Pulido’s goal.
Juan Carlos Osorio won’t have Jonathan dos Santos, Giovani dos Santos, Jurgen Damm, and Javier Aquino at his disposal, as all are struggling with injuries. That’s why the veteran, Oribe Peralta, and the pacey Porto winger, Jesus Corona, found their names on the list. Runar Kristinsson has a decision to make following the injury sustained by Iceland’s key player, Gylfi Sigurdsson, who has enormous importance on the Our Boys’ game.
