Cadiz vs Atletico Madrid 31/01/21

Estadio Ramón de Carranza is the venue as Cadiz take on La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid in the midst of a cold streak.

Cadiz have failed to win seven of their last eight La Liga matches (D3, L3), a sequence that leaves them hovering between European slots and the relegation places. A lack of firepower up front has seen ‘El Submarino Amarillo’ draw a blank in 62.5% of their last eight top-flight outings, with just three sides netting fewer La Liga goals than Cadiz (17) ahead of the kick-off. Remarkably, though, all 17 of their top-flight strikes this season have come from inside the box! Moreover, Alvaro Cervera’s men can take some comfort in the fact that they’ve avoided defeat in four of their last five home league matches (W2, D2), scoring 2+ goals in three such fixtures. But, conceding the opening goal could lead to one-way traffic, considering Cadiz have lost seven of the nine La Liga games in which they shipped the opener this term (D2).

Coming into this matchday, Atletico Madrid have conceded a league-lowest eight goals this season and are the only side yet to allow double digits. Atleti’s cagey beginnings have seen them let in only three first-half La Liga goals so far, though each of them arrived inside the opening 15 minutes of play. Away from home, ‘Los Colchoneros’ have won six of their previous seven top-flight matches (L1), scoring in both halves in five of those successes. Curiously, each of the last five La Liga matches between Cadiz and Atletico at this venue has seen the visitors score precisely once per game in fixtures garnering under 2.5 total goals (W2, D3). But, it’s worth noting that the last such meeting dates back to March 2006. Yet, Diego Simeone’s men enjoy traveling to Andalusia, having lost only once in their previous 11 La Liga trips to this autonomous community (W6, D4).
