Union Berlin vs Bayern Munich 18/05/20

18 May 2020

Bayern Munich head to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei to take on Union Berlin, looking to post their second win in as many Bundesliga (BL) H2Hs.

Just one of Union Berlin’s eight league matches since the turn of the year has ended in a draw (W3, L4), with the last four all witnessing over 2.5 goals and both teams on the scoresheet. Much more comfortable on home turf, the hosts have registered 63.33% (19) of their total 30 league points at this venue. Yet, although five of their six BL home triumphs have produced a margin of two goals, only one came against a team sitting in the top-six ahead of this round. Union Berlin’s home action usually sparks into life after the break, as Urs Fischer’s players have scored 11 of 18 BL home goals in the first half of play (61%).

Meanwhile, the visitors were on a run of four straight league victories, three of which yielding a multiple-goal margin, before the coronavirus outbreak put the season on hold. In fact, the perennial German champions have won all but one of their last 11 BL outings (D1), creating a four-point lead over second-placed Borussia Dortmund. In turn, the Bavarians had racked up six consecutive BL away triumphs before the pandemic, with each of those successes coming via at least a two-goal margin. What’s more, no team has scored more away goals than Bayern (35) this term. Particularly lethal in the first 45 minutes of play, Hansi Flick’s men have bagged 54% (19) of their total BL road goals before the halftime break.
