Union Berlin vs Mainz 28/05/20

28 May 2020

Union Berlin will hope to replicate the same performance that brought them a 3-2 away win in the Bundesliga (BL) reverse fixture against Mainz when the two sides meet at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei this midweek.

Union Berlin’s incapacity to find their footing saw them lose both of their post-coronavirus pandemic BL fixtures, drawing a blank in each and conceding over 1.5 goals apiece. As a consequence, they are now winless in four consecutive league matches (D1, L3) and harbor just a six-point lead on relegation-threatened Fortuna Dusseldorf. Problems for Union Berlin continue on home soil, as they’ve managed just one single victory in their last five top-flight games held at this venue (D1, L3), with each of those four results (win/loss) seeing the winner on the day score at least two goals. ‘Die Eisernen’ usually find their killer instinct after the halftime break, as 61% (11) of their 18 BL home goals scored so far this season came in the second half of play.

As for the visitors, they’ve failed to clinch a win in three successive league matches (D2, L1), conceding the opening goal inside the first 11 minutes of play in the last two. In turn, ‘Die Nullfünfer’ have picked up only one triumph in four BL road trips since the turn of the year (D1, L2), with each of those three results seeing the winner on the day find the net at least once in both halves. Particularly vulnerable after the break, Achim Beierlorzer’s men have shipped 59% (20) of their 34 BL away goals conceded in the second half of play.
