Schalke 04 vs Augsburg 24/05/20

24 May 2020

The two out-of-sorts sides will lock horns at the Veltins Arena this weekend, as Schalke 04 take on Augsburg in what promises to be a ‘high-scoring’ Bundesliga (BL) affair. Indeed, four of their last five top-flight H2Hs have seen both teams on the scoresheet, with three of them producing over 2.5 goals.

It’s been a dismal 2020 for the home side so far, as they’ve failed to pick up a single league win since a 2-0 home success against Borussia Monchengladbach in the opening game of the new calendar year (D4, L4), failing to find the back of the net on six of those occasions, too. In turn, the Miners have scored under 1.5 goals in all four of their BL home outings since the calendar flipped, with three of those fixtures featuring under 2.5 goals (D2, L2). The one consolation for the home fans could be the fact that Schalke take on a team they’ve not lost to in a single top-flight home H2H (W6, D2), restricting the visitors to a maximum of one goal per match seven times along the way.

Meanwhile, the visitors head to the Veltins Arena on a run of six consecutive league games without a win (D1, L5), losing the last five BL fixtures. All five of their defeats during that six-game sequence have seen Augsburg concede over 1.5 goals, allowing the opening goal on each of those occasions. It gets worse for Augsburg when they go away from home. In fact, they’ve lost all five of their previous BL road trips, failing to find the net in the last four, with each of those losses yielding a multiple-goal margin. It will be instrumental for Heiko Herrlich’s men to avoid conceding the opener. They returned just a single point from seven BL away matches in which they’ve been pegged first.
