Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Union Berlin 31/05/20

31 May 2020

The two sides that have had identical returns from their last two Bundesliga (BL) fixtures (D1, L1) will lock horns at the Borussia-Park as Borussia Mönchengladbach take on Union Berlin.

The hosts have picked up a little bit of everything since returning to action after the coronavirus pandemic (W1, D1, L1), with both of their results (win/loss) during that period seeing the identical 3-1 scoreline and the winner on the day open the scoring inside the first seven minutes of play. Also, the ‘Foals’ have endured mixed fortunes in five league home matches in 2020 (W2, D1, L2), with four of those games seeing four over 2.5 goals and both sides on the scoresheet. Even if Mönchengladbach concede the opening goal as they did in six of 14 BL home matches this season, it may not be the last – the ‘Prussians’ won three of six league home clashes in which they’ve allowed the first goal (L3).

Meanwhile, the visitors have failed to pick up a single triumph in five consecutive BL fixtures in the build-up to their first-ever top-flight trip to Mönchengladbach (D2, L3). Each of their three defeats during that five-game sequence has seen Union Berlin ship the opener and go down via a multiple-goal margin. Particularly vulnerable after the halftime break, ‘Die Eisernen’ have conceded 69% (20) of their total 29 BL away goals shipped in the second half of play. Arguably one of the slowest away starters in Germany’s top-tier competition, Urs Fischer’s men have drawn first blood only in just five of 14 BL road trips so far this season.
