Newcastle United vs Liverpool 26/07/20

26 July 2020

Newcastle United and Liverpool will face off against each other at the St. James Park this weekend in their final match of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

The hosts enter the round on a run of five Premier League games without a win (D2, L3), having conceded over 1.5 second-half goals on three of those occasions. All three of their previous league home matches have featured both teams scoring (D2, L1), which has been true in three of their last five top-flight H2Hs held at this stadium (W2, D2, L1). But, for Steve Bruce’s team, goals have been at a premium at home this calendar year. The Magpies have scored under 1.5 goals in six of their eight Premier League home fixtures since the calendar year flipped (W2, D4, L2). In fact, Newcastle are one of four sides that may finish the season without scoring 20 home goals (19).

Meanwhile, a ‘goal-friendly’ 5-3 home win over Chelsea during the midweek now means that all four of Liverpool’s last league games saw both teams score, with three producing over 2.5 goals. However, the newly-crowned champions have failed to impress away from home lately, picking up just a single win from their previous five Premier League trips (D1, L3). Curiously, each of those three defeats saw the Reds concede over 1.5 goals in one half (twice in the first half) and draw a blank after the break. Yet, Jurgen Klopp’s men will be confident of improving that record after beating Newcastle in four consecutive top-flight H2Hs – three times by at least a two-goal margin.
