Bayern Munich return to the Bundesliga (BL) action this weekend as they travel to the WWK Arena to take on a struggling Augsburg side.
The hosts enter this round frantically looking over their shoulders, as they sit just one point of the relegation territory. A slow start to the season has seen ‘Fuggerstädter’ pick up only one victory in seven BL fixtures (D2, L4), although that one win has come at home (2-1 over Eintracht Frankfurt). Still, Martin Schmidt’s men have suffered two consecutive defeats ahead of the international break, both of which have come via at least a three-goal margin. Additionally, no side has shipped more league goals than Augsburg (19) this term, which could be a major problem when they face a team they’ve lost to at home in seven of eight top-flight H2Hs (W1). Furthermore, they’ve conceded at least three goals in each of their last five home H2Hs with Bayern, scoring one goal or less four times in the process (L5).
Encouraged by a solid overall BL record against Augsburg (W13, D1, L2), the visitors will be looking to bounce back after a shock 2-1 home loss to TSG Hoffenheim last time out. Indeed, it was Bayern’s first league defeat this season (W4, D2) and also their first league reverse since a 3-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen back in February. After a heavy defeat at the BayArena, the Bavarians have racked up a nine-game unbeaten away run in the Bundesliga, securing two wins in three BL away matches this season (D1). Notably, Niko Kovac’s players have netted 3+ match goals in four of five road trips across all competitions this term, although they’ve kept a clean sheet only once.
