Bayer Leverkusen have the last train to catch if they look to battle their way to the Champions League, as they welcome an in-form RB Leipzig to the BayArena.
Sitting seven points adrift of fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, the hosts go into this meeting off the back of two successive Bundesliga losses (to TSG Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen) in which they’ve conceded seven goals while scoring two in the process. An unexpected failure to Werder has halted Bayer’s three-game BL winning run, and it was also the first time since mid-January that Peter Bosz’s men have failed to score 2+ match goals at home. Highly unpredictable, the Company XI have lost five of 13 BL home outings (W7, D1, L5), conceding 3+ match goals in four of those losses. Moreover, Leverkusen have failed to beat Leipzig in both H2H meetings at this venue since the visitors secured the top-flight status (D1, L1) with both of those games producing 4+ match goals (2-2, 2-3).
Meanwhile, Leipzig’s hopes of returning to the Champions League after a year of absence have raised notably after back-to-back BL triumphs (over Schalke and Hertha) in which they’ve scored six goals while not allowing a single one. Sitting third with a five-point lead over fifth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach, the visitors have racked up an impressive five-game BL road winning run, with four of those wins saw them beating their rivals to nil. The Red Bulls’ purple patch of form has arrived after a nightmarish period that has seen them lose five successive away games across all competitions, scoring just one goal across those encounters. Still, for Leipzig, goals have been in short supply recently, with four of their last five BL outings producing under 2.5 goals.
