Familiar foes will be standing against each other at the Fohlenplatz this weekend as Borussia Monchengladbach take on Greuther Furth in a pre-season friendly.
Although it will be their first meeting since 2017, it’s worth noting that Borussia emerged as victors in seven of their ten H2Hs since 1999 (D2, L1), including the last three. The hosts have been relentless in the early stage of their pre-season preparations, picking up three wins from as many outings, all of which yielded a full-time margin of over 1.5 goals and saw Monchengladbach keep a clean sheet. Far more prolific after the break, the ‘Foals’ have netted nine of the ten goals scored during pre-season in the second half of play. The identical 4-0 wins over Verl and Duisburg, respectively, stretched Borussia’s winning run on home turf to five, with Marco Rose’s men scoring 17 goals across those successes.
Meanwhile, Greuther Furth endured mixed fortunes to their pre-season preparations (W1, D1, L1), with both of those results (wins/losses) seeing the winner on the day keep a clean sheet. For Furth, goals have been at a premium away from home this calendar year. They’ve failed to score in three of ten road trips since the calendar flipped, netting precisely once per match in five of the other seven. Morever, eight of those ten fixtures have featured under 2.5 goals despite five seeing both teams score (W2, D6, L2). Additionally, all four of their previous trips to Monchengladbach have resulted in a loss, with three seeing the ‘Kleeblätter’ draw a blank.
