The two struggling Bundesliga (BL) sides will lock horns at the RheinEnergieStadion this weekend, as Koln take on Union Berlin in the bottom-half-of-the-table clash. Indeed, both sides have yet to pick up a win since Germany’s football restart.
Even though they’ve lost two of five league fixtures in the post-pandemic period (D3), the hosts have been an exciting team to watch – four of those five matches have seen over 3.5 goals and both sides on the scoresheet. In turn, each of Koln’s seven top-flight home matches since the turn of the year has produced at least three goals in total, with five seeing both teams score. Although this will be the first time that these two sides meet at this venue in the top-tier, ‘Die Geißböcke’ have won all but one of their previous four competitive H2Hs held here (D1). But, if they concede the opening goal, as they did in just five of 15 BL home games this season, Markus Gisdol’s men may end up empty-handed – Koln lost three such fixtures (D2).
Meanwhile, the visitors have suffered three defeats in five post-pandemic games (D2), bringing their winless BL run to seven (D3, L4). Frustratingly for the traveling fans, each of their four losses during that seven-game sequence has yielded at least a two-goal margin and witnessed Union Berlin concede at least one goal in the final 15 minutes of play. Arguably one of the weakest away sides in the league, ‘Die Eisernen’ have shipped the opening goal in ten of 15 BL road trips so far, returning just a single point from such matches.
