Lille and Chelsea will face-off at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in what will be their first-ever meeting the UEFA Champions League (CL).
The hosts have started their first CL group stage appearance since 2012/13 with a whimper rather than a bang, suffering a 3-0 away loss to Ajax. Things are unlikely to change here, as LOSC struggled to post a home win in Europe since August 2012 when they outscored FC Copenhagen 2-0 in the CL play-offs. Not only than Les Dogues have failed to pick up a continental home triumph in their last nine such matches (D4, L5), but they also lost all three home outings when they last appeared in the CL group stage. An encouraging fact for Christophe Galtier is that LOSC have pulled off two wins in six home games against the English visitors (W2, D3, L1) and have kept a clean sheet in the last two such matches (W1, D1).
Meanwhile, the reigning UEFA Europa League holders succumbed to a 1-0 home defeat to Valencia in the Group H opener, halting their 11-game European unbeaten run on home soil (W7, D4). But, the Blues will be desperate not to surrender a seven-game unbeaten European streak away from home (W5, D2) and maintain an impressive scoring form on the road. The Pensioners have bagged at least one goal in seven successive continental trips, keeping a blank sheet four times in the process. What’s more, they’ve netted 3+ match goals in five of their last nine European games, racking up 36 goals in last season’s UEFA Europa League.
