Newcastle United and Manchester United go head-to-head at St. James’ Park for a potentially low-scoring Premier League affair. Indeed, four of their last five league H2Hs held at this venue have featured under 2.5 goals and witnessed just one side find the back of the net.
The hosts have enjoyed a fairly satisfying Premier League start by their standards (W2, D1, L1), with each of those three results (wins/loss) yielding at least a two-goal margin and seeing the winner on the day get on the scoresheet first. Yet, it often takes a while before the ‘Magpies’ reach their operating temperature, as a clear majority (83.33%) of their league goals scored so far arrived in the second half of play (5/6), with four coming beyond the hour mark. Scoring against Manchester United may be an issue for Newcastle, given that they’ve netted under 1.5 goals in five of their last six Premier League H2Hs, drawing a blank in four of their previous seven top-flight H2Hs as hosts.
As for Manchester United, they have faltered at the beginning of the season, losing two of their opening three Premier League games (W1) via at least a two-goal margin. Indeed, United’s lackadaisical defending has seen them concede in all six halves of the top-flight action played so far, shipping a league second-joint high 11 Premier League goals. At the other end of the pitch, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have only netted twice from an open play themselves, with two of the remaining three goals scored arriving from the spot-kick. It could be just as difficult to find the net here, as the ‘Red Devils’ have failed to get on the scoresheet in two of their previous three top-flight trips to Newcastle (W1, L2).
