Peru and Brazil go head-to-head for their Copa America clash at the Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo that will determine the winners of Group A.
After a goalless draw with Venezuela in the opening game of the tournament, Los Incas have swept Bolivia aside with a 3-1 triumph in the second round of Copa America fixtures, and they are now one step away from securing their place in the knockout stage. However, a draw may not be enough for Peru to ensure a top-two finish in Group A, although beating Brazil seems like a daunting task for them. The two nations have played against each other 11 times in the 21st century, with the Peruvians picking up just one victory across those matches (W1, D3, L7). Ricardo Gareca’s main problem ahead of this fixture could be Peru’s apathy in the final third that has seen them score over 1.5 match goals only once in six outings in 2019.
Meanwhile, the host nation has wrapped up a comfortable 3-0 win over Bolivia on the opening matchday, but they’ve been held to a scoreless draw to Venezuela in their second game at the tournament. It was the first time since November 2017 that Brazil failed to find the net, with Tite’s men producing just one shot on target for the entire 90 minutes against La Vinotinto. However, unbeaten in all 12 games since the World Cup exit (W10, D2), the Seleção have been impressive when defending, having kept ten clean sheets across that period. Brazil will now be eager to settle the score with Peru, who dumped them out of the last Copa America when the Peruvians beat the Seleção 1-0 in the final match of the group stage to leave them empty-handed.
