Paris Saint-Germain launch their Ligue 1 home campaign this weekend, as Olympique Marseille arrive at the Parc des Princes for a massive, heavyweight clash.
Understrength PSG started their defending Ligue 1 campaign with a whimper rather than a bang, losing 1-0 on the road to newly-promoted Lens. But, playing at the Parc des Princes is a whole different thing. ‘Les Parisians’ dropped points at home just twice last season (W12, D1, L1), registering a whopping tally of 44 goals scored across 14 home league fixtures. Remarkably, ten of their 12 Ligue home triumphs back in 2019/20 arrived via at least a two-goal margin, with nine yielding a clean sheet too. Marseille’s visit could evoke more pleasant memories, considering they’ve won all but one of their previous ten top-flight H2Hs held at this venue (D1). In a true PSG style, five of those successes produced a full-time margin of over 1.5 goals and saw the hosts keep a blank sheet.
Meanwhile, Marseille got better of Brest in a five-goal thriller to secure a 3-2 away win in their opening league fixture. As a result, they are now unbeaten in all six of their top-flight trips this calendar year (W5, D1), with the wins in the last four. Moreover, only PSG (31) had racked up more points away from home than ‘Les Phocéens’ (28) in 2019/20, losing just two (14.29%) of 14 Ligue 1 away matches before the season was curtailed by the coronavirus outbreak. Also, half (5) of their ten league results (wins/losses) away from home last season saw the winner on the day keep a clean sheet (W8, L2). Curiously, Marseille ended up winning three of six Ligue 1 trips in which they shipped the opener the last term (W3, D1, L2).
