Schalke vs Borussia Dortmund 15/04/18
Last weekend’s 3-2 defeat to Hamburger SV have ended Schalke’s six-game winning streak in the Bundesliga, but the Miners are looking to return to winning ways already this weekend against the big rivals, Borussia Dortmund, whom they are set to host at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen. Arguably the biggest football derby in Germany might decide the Champions League promotion race, as both sides are currently battling their way to the most prestigious club competition in Europe. The Royal Blues have three consecutive victories at home, in which they’ve only conceded one goal, while the Black and Yellows achieved two wins in their previous five away matches, losing only to Bayern Munich by six goals to nil. Four out of last five encounters between these two teams have ended as a draw, including a spectacular 4-4 game during the first half of the season, but a draw in this match would hardly satisfy each coach.
Both squads are decimated by injuries, as Matija Nastasic, Abdul Rahman Baba, Amine Harit, and Bastian Oczipka are all struggling with physical problems in the home team, while Erik Durm, Sebastian Rode, Shinji Kagawa, Raphaël Guerreiro, and Dan-Axel Zagadou are sidelined in the visiting squad. Peter Stöger is hoping to see Manuel Akanji and Andre Schurrle fit for the game after both sustained minor muscular issues.
