Southampton vs Chelsea 14/04/18
Southampton’s disastrous season could get even worse if they fail to achieve a positive result against the struggling Chelsea side at St Mary’s Stadium this weekend, as another disappointing outcome might see them playing in the Championship next year. The Saints are desperate to end their 3-game losing streak, but given the fact, their last Premier League victory was two months ago, dealing with an opponent that has such an attacking potential won’t make things any easier for Mark Hughes’s team. Southampton have failed to win a single game in their previous eight encounters at home, losing three times in that period, while the Blues lost five consecutive games away from Stamford Bridge in all competitions, including a miserable 4-1 defeat to Watford back in February. Both sides are in crisis, and as things stand, Chelsea will missing out on Champions League football next season which is a huge blow for the club who won the EPL title only last season. A possible relegation would be devastating for Southampton, who invested immense money last summer and had big expectations ahead of this Premier League campaign.
Sam McQueen, Steven Davis, and Jack Stephens are all struggling with injuries and won’t be fit for the game, while the appearance of Shane Long and Mario Lemina still hangs in the balance. Antonio Conte won’t have David Luiz, Ross Barkley, and Davide Zappacosta, as all are yet to recover from injuries.
