Wolverhampton Wanderers take on Sevilla at the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena in Duisburg for the revamped UEFA Europa League quarter-finals decider.
The Premier League side fought their way into the quarter-finals in their first European campaign in 39 years thanks to a 2-1 aggregate success against Olympiacos in the round of 16 (1-1 A, 1-0 H). Wolves’ route to this stage of the competition also saw them overcome another Spanish adversary, Espanyol (4-0 H, 2-3 A). Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were equally impressive during the group stage (W4, D1, L1), with three of those four wins yielding a clean sheet. Bringing their six qualifying games into the equation, the ‘Wanderers’ boast an intimidating European record this season (W12, D2, L2) and an equally resounding +25 goal difference (GF:38, GA:13).
On the other hand, Sevilla reached the Europa League knockout stage as Group A winners, winning the opening five group-phase matches before succumbing to a 1-0 defeat to APOEL on Matchday 6. Yet, Los Rojiblancos barely squeezed past CFR Cluj in the round of 32 on the away goal rule (1-1 A, 0-0 H). They moved on to beat Roma 2-0 in the revamped quarter-finals to secure the Europa League quarter-finals berth for the fourth time since 2014. Notably, the Andalusian giants have successfully negotiated each of their previous three quarter-finals ties, going on to wrap up the title. Additionally, Sevilla ran out winners in three of their last seven European clashes against Premier League sides, suffering only one defeat in the other four (D3, L1).
