Manchester City travel to Molineux Stadium to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers, looking to bring a two-game losing streak in their Premier League H2Hs to a halt.
Wolves enjoyed a bright start to the season, beating Sheffield United 2-0 on the road on Matchday 1 but failed to maintain that momentum. Indeed, the hosts go into this showdown on the back of a 1-0 home loss to Stoke City in the EFL Cup, which now means that none of Wolvehampton’s previous ten home matches in all competitions has seen both teams on the scoresheet (W6, D2, L2), last season included. In fact, low scoring has been a theme at Molineux this calendar year, as nine of Wolves’ 13 competitive matches held here since the turn of 2020 have featured under 2.5 goals. That may not change now, given two of their last three top-flight H2Hs held at this stadium have contained less than three goals.
Meanwhile, it will be Manchester City’s first competitive outing since a shock 3-1 defeat to Lyon in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals back in August. That loss also means that none of City’s previous 24 fixtures across various competitions has ended in a draw (W17, L7)! Notably, a clear majority (75%) of those results (wins/losses) have seen the winner on the day keep a clean sheet, which was the case in 63.64% of their Premier League away victories back in 2019/20 (7/11). Yet, free-scoring ‘Sky Blues’ were the only Premier League side to smash a 40-goal barrier on the road last season (45 goals scored away from home), netting an average of 2.36 goals per league trip.
