Southampton vs Leicester City

Leicester City will be looking to record back-to-back Premier League wins for only the second time this season when they take on Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.

Southampton have stumbled out of the blocks on the back of the November international break, losing both Premier League matches by an aggregate score of 6-1, including a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool at the weekend. That’s a significant turnaround on their pre-international break form that had seen them win three of four Premier League fixtures (D1) by an identical 1-0 scoreline. Now just four points clear of the drop zone, the ‘Saints’ can ill-afford another slip-up, though they’ve lost six of their seven midweek Premier League games in 2021 so far (W1). Entertainment has been relatively sparse at St Mary’s Stadium this season, with five out of the six top-flight games at this venue featuring under 2.5 match goals. Indeed, Southampton’s home fixtures have produced the lowest average of 1.5 goals per game this season.

As for Leicester, a comprehensive 4-2 win over newly-promoted Watford at the weekend saw them snap an underwhelming three-game winless Premier League run (D1, L2). However, Brendan Rodgers’ men have blown hot and cold away from home this season, as evidenced by their indifferent form across six top-flight travels so far (W2, D2, L2). Unlike Southampton, the ‘Foxes’ have been fun to watch this term, with each of their six Premier League away games seeing both teams score while five of them producing 3+ overall goals. What’s more, Leicester have racked up three victories across their last four league visits to Southampton (D1), netting an average of 4.0 goals per game in the process. Curiously, that’s as many wins as they had in their previous 38 league matches at St Mary’s Stadium (W3, D14, L21).
