Lazio vs AC Milan
Out-of-sorts Lazio will be desperate to avenge a 2-0 defeat in the reverse fixture when they meet AC Milan in a Serie A blockbuster at the Stadio Olimpico.
Lazio’s faltering pursuit of their second successive top-four finish in Serie A took a tumble earlier this week as Fiorentina overhauled a halftime deficit to beat Maurizio Sarri’s charges 2-1, condemning them to a third loss in five league games (W2). Stuck in eighth in the standings, eight points adrift of fourth-placed Bologna, ‘I Biancocelesti’ return to the Stadio Olimpico to make amends for a 2-1 reversal to none other than ‘I Rossoblu’ last time out. That result halted Lazio’s imperious five-match unbeaten home streak in all competitions (W4, D1), putting them at risk of losing back-to-back home matches for the first time this season. Conceding first would probably lead to another disappointing result, with the capital-based outfit losing six out of seven league outings after falling behind in 2023/24 (W1).
In the meantime, Milan’s Scudetto hopes are dead in the water after a brace of winless league assignments (D1, L1) saw table-topping Inter Milan move a whopping 16 points clear at the summit. Stefano Pioli’s focus now switches to preserving a coveted third place, with ‘I Rossoneri’ commencing this round seven points clear of fifth-placed Atalanta. But the visitors take this trip amidst a mini-crisis (D1, L2), facing the risk of losing two straight away league H2Hs versus Lazio for the first time in over a decade following a 4-0 demolition in this corresponding fixture last term. Milan’s defensive frailties could lead to their demise at the Olimpico, with the 19-time Serie A champions shockingly conceding 2+ goals on nine of their last 11 competitive travels. But it’s worth noting they netted at least twice on ten occasions during that sequence!
