Bayer Leverkusen vs Augsburg

BayArena awaits the Bundesliga finale with trepidation as Bayer Leverkusen seek history against Augsburg.

History beckons for undefeated Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen as they bid to become the first side to complete an invincible campaign in the competition (W27, D6). Leverkusen’s formidable league form is part of an all-time European record 50-game unbeaten run, with two major finals awaiting Die Werkself in the aftermath of the Augsburg game. Anything other than three points would be an epic surprise, not least because each of Leverkusen’s 13 home league victories this season has come via multi-goal margins (D3). However, Xabi Alonso’s men can’t afford to underestimate their opposition despite a narrow 1-0 win in the reverse fixture, as they had lost back-to-back top-flight H2Hs beforehand, netting just once in that sequence.

On the other hand, Augsburg’s form has dwindled down the final stretch, with a 1-0 home loss to Stuttgart last time out rounding off an underwhelming four-game losing league streak. As a result, their European hopes have vanished in thin air, leaving the visitors to battle for a top-half finish on the final day. But departing the comforts of their home doesn’t bode well as they’ve only won four of their 16 away league matches this season (D3, L9), losing the last three in a row. The real problem is they conceded 3+ goals in each of those three defeats, considering they’re about to encounter the division’s second-most prolific attack (87).
