However, the record-time German champions have responded to that DFB-Pokal heartbreak with emphatic victories over Heidenheim (4-2) and RB Leipzig (5-1). In doing so, they’ve taken their intimidating Bundesliga goal tally for the season to 48. Furthermore, they’ve conceded a league-low 13 goals in 16 matches, demonstrating their determination to return to the throne. 

In contrast to Bayern Munich’s formidable form, Hoffenheim’s 16-year Bundesliga tenure is hanging by a thread. Last weekend’s 1-0 home defeat to Wolfsburg extended the visitors’ dreadful winless run in league action to five (D2, L3), leaving them only a point away from the bottom three. A lack of expectations ahead of this trip is somewhat understandable, considering they’ve failed to win their last 11 competitive matches on the road (D5, L6). For further context, they’ve not triumphed away from home since beating fourth-tier Wurzburger Kickers in the DFB-Pokal in August. Home and away, Christian Ilzer’s men have only won two of their last 15 Bundesliga fixtures (D5, L8), dampening their hopes of defying a disastrous 16-game away league record against Bayern (W1, D3, L12).
