Athletic Bilbao vs Sevilla

Athletic Bilbao’s underwhelming form toward the end of the season continued last weekend as they conceded twice in four minutes to give up the lead in a 2-1 defeat at Celta Vigo, making it just one win in seven La Liga matches (D3, L3). Despite missing out on their first Champions League qualification since 2014/15, Los Leones will not despair after securing Europa League football via the Coppa del Rey triumph and an imminent sixth-place finish in La Liga. Back to San Mames, where they’ve not lost a game since Real Madrid beat them on the opening day of the season (W14, D6), Ernesto Valverde’s men will be confident of pulling off their second league double over Sevilla in four years following a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture.

That defeat ended Sevilla’s four-game unbeaten H2H run (W3, D1), and the visitors are not in good shape coming into this encounter either, losing their last two league outings via a single-goal margin. Mid-table Los Rojiblancos haven’t fared well on their La Liga travels this season (W4, D6, L8), compromising their chances of posting a third consecutive away win against Bilbao. Quique Sánchez Flores’ men can still secure an unlikely top-half finish as they start the penultimate round two points adrift of 10th-placed Alaves. Connoisseurs of action-packed football may want to look elsewhere, though, with four of Sevilla’s last four away league games featuring under 2.5 goals, highlighting the potential for a low-scoring affair.
