Atletico Madrid vs Getafe

Metropolitano Stadium forms the backdrop for an all-Madrid La Liga match-up between Atletico Madrid and Getafe.

Atletico Madrid’s pursuit of an 11th straight top-four finish in La Liga has seen better days, yet a three-point lead on fifth-placed Villarreal gives them a head start at the beginning of this round. After launching the new calendar year with back-to-back winless league fixtures (D1, L1), Diego Simeone’s men have won their last two matches by an aggregate score of 4-0, suggesting their sub-par La Liga campaign is moving in the right direction. But ‘Los Rojiblancos’ are no longer unplayable at home, as was the case in some previous seasons, winning just 44% of their top-flight outings at the Metropolitano Stadium this term (W4, D2, L3). Moreover, they’ve gone winless in their last two Madrid derbies at home in La Liga (D1 L1) and could make it three in a row for the first time under Simeone.

On the other hand, Getafe painted their first post-World Cup La Liga fixture with flying colors, beating Mallorca 2-0 at home, but everything since has been an utter disaster. Quique Sanchez Flores’ men have lost all four league outings since the calendar year flipped to 2023 by a single-goal margin, slipping to 19th in the table. With three points separating them from safety, Getafe would like to avoid another slip-up, yet a 20-game winless H2H run against Atletico in La Liga (D2, L18) doesn’t look promising. Neither does the fact they’ve failed to find the net in ten of their last 11 top-flight visits to ‘Los Rojiblancos.’
