Atletico Madrid vs Getafe

Atletico Madrid will be looking to put last weekend’s derby loss to Barcelona firmly behind when they meet in-form Getafe at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.

Atletico Madrid’s Champions League pursuit suffered another setback last time out. ‘Los Colchoneros’ suffered a dismal 4-2 defeat to ten-man Barca, bringing their three-game unbeaten La Liga run to a halt (W2, D1). Back to Wanda Metropolitano, where they’ve won four of their previous five league matches (L1), including the last two on the spin, Diego Simeone’s side will seek their 11th consecutive top-flight home win over Getafe. Remarkably, each of their ten previous H2H victories at home have yielded a clean sheet, with Atletico bagging an average of 2.4 goals per game in return. What’s more, the defending Spanish champions are unbeaten in their last 18 La Liga home meetings with cross-town rivals (W16, D2). Even if they fall behind here, Atletico should have enough character to bounce back as they’ve avoided defeat in all three home league games after conceding first this term (W1, D2).

As for Getafe, an overwhelming 3-0 home triumph over basement boys Levante last time out took their unbeaten La Liga streak to three matches (W2, D1), steering them further away from the relegation zone. Curiously, ‘El Geta’ have claimed four victories in their last six La Liga outings (D1, L1), as many successes as in their previous 30 in the competition combined (W4, D11, L15). Quique Sánchez Flores’ men have scored seven goals in their last three La Liga games, which represents 35% of their total scoring tally in Spain’s top-flight this season (20). There’s a piece of history open for the taking here, as after beating Real Madrid 1-0 earlier this year, Getafe could win two consecutive Madrilean derbies in La Liga for the first time ever. However, after they’ve failed to win any of their 11 away league fixtures this season (D5, L6), that prospect looks improbable.
