Bayer Leverkusen vs Borussia Monchengladbach
A potentially high-scoring Bundesliga affair is on the cards as Bayer Leverkusen play host to Borussia Monchengladbach at the BayArena.
Bayer Leverkusen’s new Bundesliga season started with a 1-1 draw away to Union Berlin, with both goals coming within the opening 15 minutes of play. Despite conceding first against Union Berlin, ‘Die Werkself’ will be confident of drawing first blood here, having opened the scoring in their final four home matches of 2020/21 (W3, D1). A stalemate is seemingly off the table, though, with none of the last 15 Bundesliga meetings between these two teams yielding a draw, with Leverkusen picking up eight wins compared to Gladbach’s seven. More importantly, Gerardo Seoane’s men have won each of their last three top-flight H2Hs against this opposition, netting an average of 2.66 goals in the process. Worryingly, though, the hosts head into proceedings having failed to win any of their last four Bundesliga fixtures (D3, L1).
In the meantime, Borussia Monchengladbach’s heroic display on the opening weekend saw them hold perennial Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich to a 1-1 home draw. After grabbing a 4-2 victory over relegated Werder Bremen in their final road trip of 2020/21, Gladbach could post back-to-back away league wins for the first time in 2021. However, ‘Die Fohlen’ often tend to collapse in their first away match of a new Bundesliga season, as witnessed by a return of one win from their last nine such fixtures (D4, L4). Additionally, Adi Hutter’s men have conceded over 1.5 goals in each of their previous four away top-flight matches. Gladbach’s defensive woes, coupled with their keen eye for goal, saw each of their final seven Bundesliga trips in 2020/21 feature over 2.5 total goals.
