Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund

Allianz Arena sets the stage for the 135th edition of Der Klassiker as Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund go head-to-head in a Bundesliga blockbuster.

It’s been a while since Der Klassiker last had less influence on the Bundesliga title race, with 11-time consecutive champions Bayern Munich on the verge of surrendering the crown to Bayer Leverkusen after falling ten points behind Xabi Alonso’s high-flyers. However, the Bavarians haven’t given up on their slim hopes of defending the title, as witnessed by back-to-back league wins before the international break in which they netted 13 goals and conceded just three in return. A scintillating 8-1 romping of Mainz 05 in their last home league outing forms a substantial part of Bayern’s incredible haul of 78 Bundesliga goals this season – a comfortable league high. Another free-scoring fixture is on the cards as Bayern thumped Dortmund 4-0 in the reverse H2H, meaning they’ve accumulated 29 goals in their last nine duels.

Damage limitation could be at the forefront of Borussia Dortmund’s minds after conceding multiple goals in each of those nine encounters, including a 4-2 defeat in this fixture last term. Edin Terzic’s men are unsurprisingly pre-match outsiders, but they’ll travel in a buoyant mood after racking up a four-game winning streak before the international break. Three consecutive Bundesliga victories since the start of March have helped Die Werkself leapfrog RB Leipzig into fourth. But as only one point separates the two sides before the kick-off, failing to uphold an eight-game unbeaten league run on the road could see Dortmund end this round in fifth (W4, D4). Worryingly for the visiting fans, Terzic’s lads have suffered ten defeats in their last 11 meetings with Bayern (D1).
