Bayern Munich vs Manchester City

Bayern Munich will be seeking a miracle when they meet Manchester City in ther second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie at the Allianz Arena, looking to turn around a staggering 3-0 deficit.

Bayern Munich will face the uphill task of setting up their first Champions League semi-final tie since 2019/20 following a nightmarish display in Manchester. The ‘Bavarians’ have to become only the fifth team to overturn a three-goal deficit in a two-legged Champions League knockout tie to progress. But that looks far-fetched after Thomas Tuchel’s side slumped to an underwhelming 1-1 home draw to TSG Hoffenheim at the weekend, throwing their Bundesliga title bid in doubt. They’ll at least hope to avoid losing both legs of a Champions League knockout tie for only the third time in the club’s history despite going winless in their last two competitive home outings (D1, L1). Yet the signs are ominous, especially considering the record-time German champions have bagged under 1.5 goals in five of their six most recent matches.

In the meantime, Manchester City’s progression into the Champions League semi-finals for the third season in a row looks like a mere formality as they seem to have hit a purple patch at the best possible moment. After dismantling Bayern, Pep Guardiola’s high-flyers thumped Premier League underachievers Leicester City 3-1 at the weekend, extending their mind-blowing winning streak to ten straight matches. In addition to reigniting their title bid in the Premier League, the ‘Citizens’ have now netted 3+ goals in their last six competitive games, suggesting a third consecutive H2H win over Bayern could be on the cards. Adding to this sentiment, the reigning Premier League holders are unbeaten in their nine matches against German opposition in the Champions League knockout stages (W8, D1), while they’ve only lost one of their last 20 Champions League duels against Bundesliga sides (W16, D3).
