Burnley vs Chelsea

Burnley and Chelsea are set to trade tackles in their first Premier League showdown since March 2022.

It took Burnley seven rounds into the new Premier League campaign to get into the win column. But Vincent Kompany’s side finally got one over the line with a narrow 2-1 triumph at fellow newcomers Luton Town earlier this week. That result halted Burnley’s dismal six-game winless run at the start of their first top-flight season after a year-long absence (D1, L5) but proved insufficient to claw them out of the relegation zone. Back at Turf Moor, where they’ve lost all four Premier League fixtures this season via a combined score of 12-3, the ‘Clarets’ face another formidable challenge. Since a 1-1 draw in 2017, they’ve lost five consecutive home league meetings with Chelsea, including the last four in a row via multi-goal margins.

On the other hand, Chelsea found some light at the end of the tunnel with a 1-0 League Cup win over Brighton last week before arresting a three-game winless Premier League run (D1, L2) earlier this week. A quick-fire first-half double fired the ‘Blues’ to a morale-boosting 2-0 win at cross-city rivals Fulham, offering under-fire manager Mauricio Pochettino some respite. But the Argentine tactician cannot get too comfortable, with Chelsea languishing in the bottom half of the standings, a whopping eight points behind 4th-placed Liverpool. Indeed, the ‘Pensioners’ have only won twice in their opening seven Premier League outings (D2, L3), one which saw them thump newly-promoted Luton 3-0. The upcoming clash against another promoted club could inspire Chelsea’s bid to post back-to-back away league wins for the first time since October 2022.
