Cadiz vs Athletic Bilbao
Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla is the venue as Cadiz and Athletic Bilbao go head-to-head in a potentially low-scoring La Liga contest.
After taking their survival battle to the final day last season, Cadiz’s start to the 2022/23 La Liga campaign suggests they could be in for another season-long fight against the drop. Having lost their opening two league games ‘to nil,’ Sergio Gonzalez’s men head into proceedings as the only La Liga side yet to find the back of the net this term. Cadiz’s hopes of getting the new top-flight season back on the rails, as they’ve lost both previous home La Liga meetings with Athletic via an aggregate score of 2-7. Playing on Monday (European time) doesn’t suit ‘El Submarino Amarillo’ at all, considering they’ve picked up just one win from eight La Liga matches played on this day (D3, L4), courtesy of a 1-0 win over Barca in their most recent such fixture.
In the meantime, following a goalless home draw with Mallorca on the opening weekend, Athletic Bilbao claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Valencia last time out and could avoid conceding a goal in their first three matches of a new La Liga season for only the fourth time in the club’s history. However, Ernesto Valverde’s lads have lost both previous top-flight outings on hostile turf without scoring and could now make it three defeats ‘to nil’ in a row for the first time since April 2018. That’s not out of the realm of possibility, given that ‘Los Leones’ have lost three of their last six La Liga encounters against Cadiz (W3), failing to score in each reverse.
