Getafe vs Sevilla
Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Perez is the venue as Getafe and Sevilla battle it out for a place in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.
While Getafe experienced a false start to 2024 in La Liga, losing 2-0 at home to Rayo Vallecano, they rectified that mistake with a narrow 1-0 win at second-tier Espanyol in the previous Copa del Rey round. Bidding to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2018/19, ‘El Geta’ take on an out-of-sorts Sevilla side they’ve defeated by 2+ goals ‘to nil’ across their last two La Liga H2Hs. Ominously for visiting manager Quique Sanchez Flores, the last time Getafe met ‘Los Rojiblancos,’ his predecessor Diego Alonso was relieved of his duties. Barring the abovementioned loss to Vallecano, the hosts have gone unbeaten in five of their last six competitive outings (W4, D1) and will take the field in a buoyant mood.
In contrast to Getafe’s impressive run of form, Sevilla’s dreadful 2023/24 campaign hit a new low at the weekend as Deportivo Alaves won 4-3 at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, condemning the Andalusian outfit to a third defeat in their last four matches (W1). A hard-earned 2-1 win against Segunda Division side Ferrol in this competition is the only exception in that run, highlighting the depth of the crisis. Indeed, except for a 3-0 thumping of La Liga relegation candidates Granada, ‘Los Rojiblancos’ are winless in 12 of their last 13 encounters against fellow top-flight rivals (D6, L6). It’s also worth noting they’ve failed to score more than once in nine of those 12 fixtures.
