Guadeloupe vs Jamaica
Guadaloupe will fight for their 20201 CONCACAF Gold Cup survival when they take on high-flying Jamaica at the Exploria Stadium.
Guadeloupe’s 2021 Gold Cup journey has started with a whimper rather than a bang, with ‘Les Gwada Boys’ finding themselves on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline against Costa Rica on Matchday 1. Guadeloupe’s path to the group stages started with a comfortable 2-0 win over the Bahamas in the preliminary semi-finals before a penalty shoot-out success over Guatemala in the play-off final. Before going down to Costa Rica in their tournament curtain-raiser, Jocelyn Angloma’s side had been on a six-match winning streak in all competitions, with four of those victories yielding a full-time margin of 2+ goals. However, since finishing fourth in the 2007 Gold Cup, Guadeloupe have won just two of their subsequent seven matches in the competition (L5), losing the last five in a row by an aggregate score of 12-3.
On the other hand, Jamaica’s quick-fire brace beyond the 80th minute saw them overcome Suriname 2-0 in their Group C opener as they look to cement their place in the knock-outs with another win here. The ‘Reggae Boyz’ can draw confidence from winning each of their four historical H2H meetings with Guadeloupe. Curiously, three of their four H2H triumphs have yielded the identical 2-0 scoreline. But before beating Suriname, Jamaica had gone three consecutive internationals without winning (D1, L2), conceding precisely four goals apiece across those two defeats. When it comes to competitive matches, Theodore Whitmore’s men have gone unbeaten in six games on the trot (W5, D1) since succumbing to a 3-1 loss to the United States in the 2019 Gold Cup semi-finals. Notably, each win during that six-match sequence came by over 1.5 goals ‘to nil.’
