Hungary vs Portugal

Euro 2020 ‘Group of Death’ returns to the fold as Hungary and France go head-to-head at the Puskás Aréna in the second round of the group stage fixtures.

Despite fending off Portugal’s unrelenting attacks for 84 minutes, Hungary ended up on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline in their Group F opener. The ‘Magyars’ now stare at the prospect of losing back-to-back opening games at a major tournament for the first time since the 1978 World Cup. Heading into Matchday 2, the Hungarians have conceded more goals at the last two Euro finals combined (11) than any other side, seven of which arrived in their last two tournament fixtures. They now entertain a formidable challenge in the shape of France, the team that won both of their only previous meetings at major tournaments by an aggregate score of 6-1. By extension, Hungary have lost each of their last five matches against France, scoring just three goals while conceding 12 in return.

On the other hand, France go into this round on the back of a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Germany that saw them attempt just four shots on goal. The Euro 2016 runners-up have hit a purple patch as they enter Matchday 2 having won their last five international fixtures without conceding a single goal. France are now aiming to secure six consecutive victories for the first time since 2016, a sequence that saw them score in their opening two games of the tournament. However, ‘Les Bleus’ have failed to beat Hungary six times in their seven meetings on Hungarian soil (D1, L6). Notably, though, Didier Deschamps’ men have found the net in all but one of their previous 17 matches in all competitions, scoring in the last seven in a row.
