Inter Milan vs Lecce
Stadio Giuseppe Meazza sets the stage for Inter Milan’s must-win home match against perennial Serie A strugglers Lecce.
Inter’s confidence took a significant hit in midweek Coppa Italia action as a 2-1 extra-time heartbreak against Bologna denied them the opportunity to win the title for a third season on the trot. However, they seem well-positioned to lift the Scudetto for the first time in three years after an impressive ten-game unbeaten league run (W8, D2) catapulted them to the top of the table. Four points clear of second-placed Juventus, Simone Inzaghi’s men are odds-on favorites to dethrone Napoli this season. Considering they’ve netted at least eight more goals than any other Serie A team (39) while conceding a league-low seven, it’s little wonder they’re the bookies’ top candidates to win the crown. Another emphatic scoreline is on the cards here, with Inter emerging victorious in 16 of their last 17 home league encounters against Lecce (L1).
Visiting Lecce would be forgiven for believing in miracles after a late 2-1 home win against Frosinone last weekend inspired them to their first Serie A victory since September. Fresh off ending a disastrous 11-game winless league run (D6, L5), ‘I Giallorossi’ take this trip to avenge a brace of defeats to Inter last season and potentially post their first top-flight win at Meazza since 2000. However, they’ve since lost nine consecutive Serie A away games against Inter, conceding multiple goals on eight occasions. Defensive leaks have been an issue for Lecce this season, as they’ve yet to keep a clean sheet on the road. Therefore, it’s no surprise they’re one of only four sides yet to win a top-flight match away from home in 2023/24 (D5, L2).
