Liverpool vs Newcastle United
Anfield plays host to Liverpool’s tasty-looking midweek Premier League clash against Newcastle United.
Liverpool’s dismal three-game start to the season that featured a pair of scoring draws with Crystal Palace and Fulham alongside a 2-1 defeat at Manchester United looks like ancient history ahead of the kick-off. That’s because Jurgen Klopp’s hard-hitters dismantled promoted Bournemouth 9-0 at the weekend in a record-equalling Premier League triumph to regain confidence. The ‘Reds’ have hit their stride in time to extend their jaw-dropping 26-match unbeaten home streak against Newcastle in Premier League action (W21, D5). What’s more, since a 2-0 away loss in December 2015, the Merseyside heavyweights have gone unbeaten in 11 successive top-flight meetings with this opposition (W7, D4), including victories in both last season’s H2Hs. Liverpool should be able to add to that tally, as they’ve netted more Premier League goals against Newcastle (109) than they have against any other opponent.
In the meantime, Newcastle United rescued a late 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend, courtesy of Allan Saint-Maximin’s thunderous volley from outside the box. However, with the Frenchman also picking up a knock at Molineux Stadium, the visitors’ bid to maintain their 100% unbeaten record in the 2022/23 Premier League campaign (W1, D3) looks a bit far-fetched. Eddie Howe’s men know no fear, though, as witnessed by their stellar 3-3 home draw with reigning champions Manchester City a fortnight ago. Keen to rewrite the history books on the back of Alexander Isak’s arrival from Real Sociedad in a club-record transfer deal, the ‘Magpies’ head into proceedings unbeaten in four of their last five Premier League away games (W2, D2). Three of those matches saw one or both sides fail to score.
