Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich

A place at Wembley Stadium is up for grabs as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich go head-to-head in the return leg of their evenly-poised Champions League semi-final tie.

There’s nothing to separate the two sides after a 2-2 first-leg draw in Germany, but recent history is on Real Madrid’s side. Los Blancos have won their last two semi-final ties against Bayern Munich to improve the overall H2H balance at this stage of the competition (W3, L4). Carlo Ancelotti’s men ought to be confident after sealing their 36th La Liga title this past weekend with a scintillating 3-0 home triumph against Cadiz. That was their 37th competitive triumph this season (D10, L2) and a fifth consecutive home outing in which they’ve netted 2+ goals (W4, D1). Madrid’s stellar run of not losing a single home game this season, aided by their dominant record against German clubs in UEFA two-legged ties (W19, D8), should set them up nicely for this crunch encounter.

In the meantime, Bayern Munich slumped to a 3-1 defeat at fellow Bundesliga rivals Stuttgart over the weekend, renouncing a six-game unbeaten streak across all competitions (W4, D2). More troubling is the fact Thomas Tuchel’s men have only won once on their last four competitive travels (D1, L2), conceding 3+ goals on three occasions! Against this backdrop, the Bavarians boast fond memories of their recent visits to Spain, having lost just one of their last 12 away matches against La Liga clubs (W7, D4). But despite their superb record on Spanish soil, they still lament a negative score in UEFA two-legged ties against the Spaniards (W11, L12), including defeats in six of their last eight. A record filled with contradictions has seen Bayern lose just one of their ten most recent European matches against La Liga adversaries (W6, D3).
