San Diego Loyal vs Borussia Dortmund

Snapdragon Stadium is the venue as second-tier United States side San Diego Loyal and Borussia Dortmund go head-to-head in an intriguing summer friendly.

San Diego Loyal will be taking the field in high spirits following a 5-0 demolition of fellow USL Championship rivals Colorado Springs, inspired by a 2-0 lead within the opening nine minutes. After six consecutive winless outings (D4, L2), Nate Miller’s men have won the last two in a row by multi-goal margins and without conceding, breaking the deadlock inside the first 20 minutes on both occasions. Only two points clear of 9th-placed Monterey Bay in the Western Conference, they cannot rest easy yet. But a mouth-watering friendly against Bundesliga colossi Dortmund could be a welcoming distraction, even though they’re heavily expected to falter in this fixture. Since five of San Diego’s last seven matches have featured over 2.5 goals, fans in attendance should be in for a treat.

In the meantime, Borussia Dortmund have gone from strength to strength in pre-season, winning all three exhibition matches by an aggregate score of 12-3, albeit all three games came against Germany’s lower-league teams. Interestingly, Edin Terzic’s men have won their last two summer friendlies despite conceding an early opener on each occasion. Since a 2-0 DFB-Pokal loss to RB Leipzig at the beginning of April, the Bundesliga runners-up have gone unbeaten in 11 successive outings (W8, D3), underlining their status as pre-match favorites in this contest. Moreover, they’ve won their last four games outside Signal Iduna Park, netting an average of 3.75 goals per match.
