Sweden vs Serbia

Friends Arena sets the stage for a handsomely-looking international friendly between Sweden and Serbia.

Jon Dahl Tomasson’s return to his homeland didn’t go to plan earlier this week as Denmark defeated his Sweden side 2-1, condemning him to his second loss in three games in charge since his appointment in February (W1). Another sub-par performance from the ‘Blagult’ maintained an unorthodox streak that has seen none of their last 18 games end as a draw (W11, L6). After failing to qualify for Euro 2024, Sweden’s minds remain focused on preparing for the Nations League tournament in September, and this homecoming fixture bodes well. Back to Friends Arena in Solna, the Swedes should feel confident despite their form wobble, knowing they’ve won their last three internationals here without conceding.

However, Serbia thumped Sweden the last time the two sides met in September 2022, running out 4-1 victors in the Nations League to strengthen an impressive H2H record (W3, L1). Unlike their hosts, the Eagles will compete at Euro 2024. But their disappointing five-game pre-tournament form (W1, D2, L2) can’t inspire much confidence ahead of their maiden Euros appearances as an independent country. Dragan Stojkovic’s side slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Austria this week, marking a third match in their last four to see them concede 2+ goals. Despite their underwhelming form in 2024 (W1, L2), the Serbs have proved strong starters, with their two goals this calendar year coming in the first half.
