Tottenham Hotspur vs Leicester City
Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City are set to face each other at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in contrasting Premier League circumstances.
Tottenham conceded two stoppage-time goals in an underwhelming 2-0 Champions League defeat at Sporting Lisbon in midweek as their unbeaten 2022/23 start went out of the window. Desperate to bounce back immediately, ‘Spurs’ return to the Premier League, where they’ve not lost a single fixture this term (W4, D2). Antonio Conte’s side claimed a hard-earned 2-1 win over fellow London rivals Fulham last time out, taking their winning home streak in the Premier League to six matches. Tottenham’s longest winning league run at the new stadium is likely to go on as the Londoners have come out victorious in seven of their previous nine top-flight meetings with Leicester, including the last three in a row. Another success would see them win four consecutive league matches against this opposition for the first time in history.
However, visiting Leicester City will be motivated to prevent that from happening and potentially take advantage of the fatigue that’s catching up with Tottenham these days. Pinned to the foot of the Premier League table, the ‘Foxes’ have lost five league matches on the trot since being held to a 2-2 home draw to Brentford on the opening weekend. With Leicester experiencing their worst six-game start to a new league campaign in the Premier League era, manager Brendan Rodgers should fear for his job. The Northern Irishman’s longest run of league defeats in his managerial career has brought him under heavy scrutiny and this weekend’s trip to London could spell the end of his tenure in the East Midlands. With Leicester losing four of their last five Premier League games away to Tottenham (W1), the immediate future looks dark from Rodgers’ point of view.
