Viettel vs Kaya

Viettel and Kaya go head-to-head at the Thammasat Stadium in their final AFC Champions League Group F fixture.

Viettel’s hopes of making it out of the group stages are long gone as they take the field on the run of three consecutive Group F defeats, returning an alarming -7 goal difference from that sequence (GF:1, GA:8). Indeed, except for a 5-0 thumping of Kaya in the reverse fixture back on Matchday 2, the Vietnamese side have lost each of their remaining four group phase matches, drawing a blank on three occasions. Since being held to a goalless draw to domestic rivals Hanoi in October 2020, none of Viettel’s subsequent nine home matches in all competitions have ended level (W4, L5), with 66% of those results (win/loss) seeing the winner on the day keep a clean sheet.

On the other hand, the visitors look destined for a bottom-placed finish after losing their opening five group stage games by an aggregate scoreline of 15-2. If they find the back of the net here, it is likely to be beyond half-time, considering both of their Champions League goals scored this season arrived in the second half of play. Before back-to-back Group F losses to Ulsan Hyundai and Pathum United, Kaya had gone unbeaten in five competitive road trips in a row (W3, D2). Still, there’s been plenty of action in Kaya’s recent away matches, with three of their last four road trips witnessing over 2.5 goals and both teams on the scoresheet.
