Wolfsburg vs RB Leipzig

Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig are set to square off at the Volkswagen Arena in a Bundesliga top-six six-pointer this weekend.

Wolfsburg’s inexorable march toward European placings ended abruptly in late January, with Niko Kovac’s men picking up just one point in their last three Bundesliga outings (D1, L2). Left five points behind sixth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt following a frustrating 0-0 draw at basement boys Schalke last time out, ‘Die Wolfe’ could equal their longest winless run in the top-flight under Kovac (4). That’s well in the realm of possibility, with Wolfsburg registering just one win in their last 11 encounters against Leipzig across all competitions (D4, L6). They lost 2-0 on both their trips to Leipzig in 2022 and could now make it three H2H defeats on the trot for the first time in the club’s history. But considering they boast a league joint-best record of eight clean sheets in the Bundesliga this term, anything’s still possible.

In the meantime, visiting RB Leipzig turned a 1-0 halftime lead into a 2-1 defeat at home to Union Berlin last weekend, falling seven points behind the title pace. Marco Rose’s men have struggled with inconsistent performance since the league resumed after the World Cup, registering partial success across their five Bundesliga matches in 2023 (W2, D2, L1). On a more positive note, ‘Die Roten Bullen’ are unbeaten on their last six league travels (W3, D3), netting at least twice four times along the way. That threatens to tuck them into a false sense of security, though, as the big picture says Leipzig have won just three of their ten away games in the Bundesliga this season (D4, L3).
