Young Boys vs Inter Milan
Stadion Wankdorf sets the stage for a lopsided UEFA Champions League encounter between Young Boys and Inter Milan.
Despite a 2-1 win against Luzern at the weekend, Young Boys’ hopes of defending the Swiss Super League title may already be dead in the water after only ten rounds. It was only their second league win this season (D3, L5), though it did see them halt a three-game losing streak without finding the net. Back to their European commitments, Youngs Boys head into proceedings as one of only eight teams to have lost their opening two Champions League matches. Moreover, those two defeats against Aston Villa and Barcelona witnessed Joel Magnin’s side concede eight unanswered goals, capitulating at least three times on each occasion. Staring down the barrel of a four-game losing run in the Champions League main draw for the first time in club history, the Swiss giants bid to defy an underwhelming run of three defeats from their last four home outings at Europe’s top table, qualifiers excluded (W1).
On the other hand, Inter Milan solidified their quest to defend their Serie A title last weekend with a 1-0 away win against Roma, extending their winning league streak to three matches. On top of that, Simone Inzaghi’s side followed up a spirited 0-0 draw against Manchester City on matchday one with a 4-0 romping of Red Star Belgrade last time out, entering round three as one of only six sides yet to concede a goal in this latest Champions League edition. However, ‘I Nerazzurri’ would be naive to take anything for granted, considering they’re winless in their last three Champions League away matches (D2, L1) – their worst such run since losing four in a row in 2019. Breaking the deadlock could set the tone for a much-needed triumph, given that only five of Inter’s last 19 Champions League games have seen both teams score.
